Osvaldo Golijov is that rare composer of contemporary classical music someone whose work is original and challenging, but also passionate, swinging, and fun. Born in La Plata, Argentina, to an Eastern European Jewish family, Golijov grew up in a musical home, surrounded by the colliding sounds of classical music, klezmer, and salsa. Combining and adding to this unusual mix of styles, he has created an impressive body of chamber, orchestral, operatic, and choral works that has profoundly shifted the geography of the classical music world. Winner of two Grammy Awards and a “genius grant” from the MacArthur Foundation, he was honored by Lincoln Center in 2006 with a month-long festival devoted to his works.
Golijov will talk with Boston Globe music critic Jeremy Eichler about his life and music; the evening will also feature a performance of his chamber piece Tenebrae, by the Borromeo String Quartet.
